Suffolk County Jericho Turnpike Route 25 Deadliest Again
Route 25 or as other may know it as Jericho Turnpike between the towns of Centereach to almost 12 miles to Ridge has been named the most dangerous road for pedestrians in the tri-state area. Federal accident statistics from 2011 to 2013 for roads in New York’s 12 downstate counties, found that 20 people were killed on Jericho Turnpike, also known as Route 25 to many locals.
Some improvements have already been implemented by local government including upgrading crumbling sidewalks, filling in gaps and installing better lighting along four miles of the road in Riverhead. Many are still saying as the number is still increasing, more safety projects are needed for Suffolk County.
Also not far behind Suffolk County was Hempstead Turnpike in Nassau County. Also known to locals as Route 24, it ranked second on the list. Having recorded 11 pedestrian deaths during the three-year span of 2011-2013.
As a reminder we all share the roads together as a community. We need to all try to be safe and make sure we all get home safe. A good defense makes a strong offense when it comes to driving. It is better to be late than sorry. So please slow down and take your time to get to your destination.
- Some other ares that you should be aware of are Route 110 in Suffolk County. This road tied for fourth place with Merrick Road in Nassau County, both with nine deaths each.
- Route 27A in Suffolk County as well, which tied for fifth place with eight deaths.
- Sunrise Highway in Nassau, which tied for sixth place with seven deaths.
- Route 25A in Suffolk County, which had six fatalities as well.
- Sunrise Highway in Suffolk County also had a high number.
Our respect and condolences go out to all the family and friends of all the tragically deceased. Lets hope we can all work together to reduce this number in the future.
