August 18, 2013 – Ronkonkoma , NY on Long Island, at Suffolk Counties largest lake a search is still on for missing kayaker who may of had medical conditions.
Our thought’s are with the family an-all of those involved in this search and rescue effort.
Updated 8/23/2014: Kevin Conley’s body found at about 46 feet below the lake with no visibility and the use of sonar. Additional information will be on another post with a link from this story. Bless all the people who helped search for this man to give his family some closure. And bless the family at these hard times.
Updated 8/22/2014 : The search is still on including sonar and divers. It has been 10 days since Kevin Conley went missing in Lake Ronkonkoma.
Update 08/19/2014 : A trained police dog in detecting a cadaver as well as an underwater camera were brought in Monday to help find a The still missing kayak last seen five days ago disappearing into the waters of Lake Ronkonkoma, Suffolk police said.
The German shepherd and his handler got on a boat that navigated the lake looking for Kevin Conley, 40, police said. The dog was also prepared to search on land. But as of this time he is still believed to be in the lake.
“His thing was to smell the bubbles” and the boat waves for the scent of human remains, has been quoted from emergency personal.
Police conducted an hourlong search Sunday for the missing kayaker presumed drowned in Lake Ronkonkoma, marking the fourth day police looked for the Sound Beach man without recovering his body.
Officers with the Suffolk police marine bureau took a police boat out from the Lt. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Park beach on the Brookhaven side of the lake at 10:30 a.m. They conducted a grid search on the surface of the lake before speeding around it to kick up waves hoping the body of Kevin Conley, 40, would surface, police officials said.
Police will come back for “sporadic”. Searches to try to locate the kayaker.
Dale Spencer, curator at the Lake Ronkonkoma Historical Society, said the lake is 65 or 70 feet deep in the spot where witnesses said Conley disappeared.
Residents, some with binoculars, came out Sunday morning to survey the lake. And try to help and locate this man before it gets to long. Rumors of small searches out of the water in the surrounding area, beach, and wooded areas are also being searched.
So far what we know as of now is,
Conley overturned in his kayak shortly before 3:30 p.m. Thursday. Witnesses said the boaters life vest slipped off and he went under, police said.
The report triggered a search, which included divers from at least seven fire and police departments. Suffolk police divers recovered the kayak Friday.
Harold Conley said Friday his son had been diagnosed with Huntington’s disease, a brain disorder. We all hope this will be over quickly and so that the healing process may begin.
