Long Island Gas Rationing ending Friday at Midnight
One week after gas rationing to help ease fuel lines across Long Island, the policy will be suspended.
Nassau and Suffolk officials announced an end to gas rationing, which will take effect at midnight Friday. The Long Island gas rationing was put into action a week ago.
Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone made the joint announcement to stop using odd-even license plate numbers for designated days to pump gasoline.
A spokeswoman for Suffolk Executive Steve Bellone said emergency rationing was ending because lines have almost disappeared at gas stations. Rationing will end just after midnight, as Saturday begins.
A fuel crisis gripped Long Island for nearly two weeks after Hurricane Sandy struck, creating hours-long lines for gas, purchase limits and claims of price gouging. But it mostly calmed down when rationing went into effect last Friday.
