Feathered Fun for Everyone at Chicken Day
Flock over to Charlotte Nature Museum for this favorite Creature Feature
on January 18, 2014
Charlotte, NC – Why did the chicken cross the road? To visit Charlotte Nature Museum for Chicken Day on Saturday, January 18 from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
This month’s Creature Feature will introduce visitors to six breeds of chickens and three recently hatched baby chicks: Buckeye chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus), Araucana chickens (Gallus sp.), Polish chickens and baby chicks (Gallus sp.), Buff Orpington chickens (Gallus sp.), Australorp chickens (Gallus sp.) and Silkie chickens (Gallus gallus japonese silkie).
Museum naturalists will be on hand with fun feathered facts. For instance, did you know chickens can fly, but not for long? The longest recorded flight of a chicken is only 13 seconds. Though they aren’t great flyers, chickens are fast runners. They can travel up to nine miles per hour if feeling threatened.
Make sure to welcome our newest chicken friends, the baby white-crested black Polish chicks. These fluffy babies were hatched in early January and are distinguished by their black bodies and white “top hats.” They’ll help us learn about how chickens lay eggs and what happens during the incubation period before hatching.
Wait — don’t fly the coop just yet! Every monthly Creature Feature includes a craft, Puppet Show and storytelling. This month, guests will get to make their own paper cup chickens to take home, before strutting over to the Puppet Show for a birds-eye view of “The Shadow Knows.” Don’t get your feathers ruffled in these fun chicken games: Pin the Comb on the Rooster and Rubber Chicken Toss.
Creature Feature activities are free with Museum admission. Admission: $6 ages two and older, younger-than-two and Members are free. Parking is free.
