Finally, over in the National League is the biggest surprise team of them all. As crazy as it sounds for a team that won the World Series two years ago and went back to the NLCS last season, I’ve been stunned by the success of the St. Louis Cardinals this season. No matter what, they always seem to do it. Chris Carpenter out for the year, whole new cast of characters, best record in the Majors. It’s truly a testament to the entire organization. What the Cardinals are doing is working.

James Gandolfini, best known for his role as a mob boss on HBO’s tv series “The Sopranos,” died Wednesday while on vacation in Italy. He was 51 years young.

The exact cause of death is not known, but his managers said it was possibly a heart attack.

Long Island, NY- State environmental officials are on the lookout for an alligator spotted near the Connecticut Avenue boat ramp along the Peconic River in Calverton.”We got the first report Sunday night. It was confirmed, seen by our officers, Wednesday,” Aphrodite Montalvo, a spokeswoman for the Long Island office of the state Department of Environmental Conservation, said Friday.
The sighting is in the same area where DEC officials captured four young alligators in April, she said.

With ESPN reaching a deal to take over the US Open last week, that leaves the French Open as the only tennis major that won’t be seen exclusively on ESPN in two years. The only reason I’m bringing that up now is because we’ve reached that time of year. The time when “An American In Paris” refers to a movie, not a tennis player. The time when Rafael Nadal channels his inner Taylor Swift and pretends to be surprised he won the French Open again (as if anyone could actually be surprised by that).
