The Long Island Expressway will be closed to all traffic in Nassau and Suffolk counties at starting midnight says Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo Thursday as a predicted blizzard approached.
The governor, calling the closing a matter of “prudence,” said a decision would be made in the early morning hours on whether to reopen the vital east-west highway at 5 a.m. Friday.
He said the Northern and Southern State parkways would remain open and that he would decide by 4 a.m. whether the LIE would reopen at 5 a.m. Friday.
“This is nothing to be trifled with,” Cuomo said. He said he was declaring a statewide emergency, which could increase the penalty for driving on a closed roadway to a misdemeanor. Aides said it is normally a traffic violation.
